Using non-Epson papers

I currently use Pinnacle papers from Paper Spectrum (www.paperspectrum.co.uk), which leads to the question of what are the correct printer settings? For glossy paper the printer setup has a choice of: Glossy, Premium Glossy, Ultra Glossy or just plain Photo Quality Inkjet. I found a useful test image on the Northlight Images website (www.northlight-images.co.uk). This prints squares from 0,0,0 (black) to 255,255,255 (white). Printing this with the different media settings, there appears to be no difference in the amount of ink put on the paper between any of the settings. One setting that does make a difference is the box which gives a choice between ‘Photo’ and ‘Photo RPM (max DPI)’. The latter setting does give a smoother image, but this option is not available with the Photo Quality Inkjet setting. Using high speed makes no discernible difference. So I’ve settled on Epson Glossy, Photo RPM, High Speed.

The other relevant setting in the printer driver is Color Management. I’ve set this to ICM, ICM Mode = Driver ICM (Basic), Intent = Relative, but I haven’t explored these settings in great detail. Once I’ve had printer profiles made the colour management will be done in Photoshop.
